Knitting Variegated Yarns
A study of Lace Stitches
As you saw with the Feather & Fan Lace Ensemble and the two eyelet patterns in Part 1, lace stitches can be accentuated by variegated yarns for interesting effects.
Lace that is knitted is characterized by openings or holes in the fabric in a pattern. The type of yarn does not necessarily denote the type of lace. In the 1800's fine lace patterns were the mode for ladies apparel and home accessories. The Victorian Era, named for Queen Victoria of England is known as the era of Shetland lace. Queen Victoria is known to have brought the art of knitting lace forefront across the world.
In this century, lace patterns come from Japan, Germany, England , America and basically allover knitters are knitting a type of lace.
There are many types of Knitted Lace:

Eyelet: A sturdier fabric of well designed "holes "creating a pattern surrounded by solid fabric. Not as " lacy" and airy as bobbin or needle lace or fine gauge yarn knitted lace. Great for scarves, hats, garments, socks, home accessories.

Lace Knit: A term used for lace stitch combinations that have a right and wrong side. Not as open or airy as Knitted or Shetland lace which have less stitches between "holes" in pattern. Does not denote a denier of yarn used. Lace knit can be found in all types of knitted items from clothing to baby items and home accessories.

Lace Insert or Panel:A term used for sections of lace in an item. Used in apparel, home accessories and baby items. A small section of lace knit surrounded by stable fabric can be created in vertical or horizontal stripes.
Knitted Lace: Pattern stitches on both sides, creating a reversible pattern. Knitted lace denotes cobweb, fine thread or lace so fine it is called " Wedding Ring" Lace for a knitted lace shawl could slide through a woman's wedding band. Shetland Lace is one of the monikers used to denote fine lace knitting patterns, developed in Europe during Queen Victoria's reign. Shetland lace is classified into categories: Centers, Borders and Edgings.

Lace Edgings: Denotes a knitted trim. Some are knitted onto the garment after seaming, some are sewn or applied to the item. Lace edgings are a great way to learn the art of knitted lace without creating a large item and concentrating on the technique. Lace edgings can be patterned on both sides as " knitted lace" or one sided as " lace knit" in any weight of yarn. It is a great addition to purchased apparel and home accessories.
